Luxembourg Palace | Jardin du Luxembourg

Luxembourg Palace | Jardin du Luxembourg

The palace was built for Marie de Medicis, mother of king Louis XIII of France and of Gaston, duc d'Orleans, just near the site of an old hotel particulier owned by Francois-Henri de Montmorency, duc de Piney-Luxembourg, hence its name (now called Petit Luxembourg, home of the president of French Senate). Marie de Medicis desired to make a building similar to her native Florence's Palazzo Pitti, and to this effect had the main architect Salomon de Brosse[1] send architect Clement Metezeau? to Florence to obtain drawings.[2][3][4][5] Marie de Medicis bought the structure and its fairly extensive domain in 1612 and commissioned the new building, which she referred to as her Palais Medicis,[6] in 1615. Its construction and furnishing formed her major artistic project, though nothing remains today of the interiors as they were created for her, save some architectural fragments reassembled in the Salle du Livre d'Or.[7] The suites of paintings she commissioned, in the subjects of which she expressed her requirements through her agents and advisors, are scattered among museums.

Floor plan shows the large enclosed cour d'honneur
A series of twenty-four triumphant canvases were commissioned from Peter Paul Rubens.[8] A series of paintings executed for her Cabinet dore ("gilded study") was identified by Anthony Blunt in 1967.[9] To the right of the block of the Luxembourg, erected at the same time, was the mass of the Palais du Petit-Luxembourg (see below).
Marie de Medicis installed her household in 1625, while work on interiors continued. The apartments to one side were reserved for the Queen and the matching suite on the other for her son, Louis XIII (floor plan). Construction was finished in 1631; the Queen Mother was forced from court shortly after, following the "Day of the Dupes" in November 1631. Louis XIII commissioned further decorations for the Palace from Nicolas Poussin and Philippe de Champaigne.
In 1642, Marie bequeathed the Luxembourg to her second and favourite son, Gaston d'Orleans. Upon Gaston's death, the palace passed to his widow, Marguerite de Lorraine, then to his elder daughter by his first marriage, Anne, duchesse de Montpensier, La Grande Mademoiselle. In 1660, Anne de Montpensier sold the Luxembourg to her younger half-sister, Elisabeth Marguerite d'Orleans, duchesse de Guise who, in turn, gave it to her cousin, king Louis XIV, in 1694.
In 1750, the palace became a museum—the forerunner of the Louvre—, and was open two days a week until 1779.[10] In 1778, the palace was given to the comte de Provence by his brother Louis XVI. During the French Revolution, it was briefly a prison, then the seat of the French Directory and later the first residence of Napoleon Bonaparte, as First Consul of the French Republic. It has continued its senatorial role, with brief interruptions, ever since.
In the nineteenth century, the palace was extensively remodeled, with a new garden facade by Alphonse de Gisors (1836–1841), and a cycle of paintings (1845–1847) by Eugene Delacroix that was added to the library.

In fine weather, Parisians fill the Jardin du Luxembourg
During the German occupation of Paris (1940–1944), Hermann Goring took over the palace as the headquarters of the Luftwaffe in France, taking for himself a sumptuous suite of rooms to accommodate his visits to the French capital.
His subordinate, Luftwaffe Field Marshal Hugo Sperrle, was also given an apartment in the Luxembourg palace, and spent most of the war enjoying the luxurious surroundings. "The Field Marshal's craving for luxury and public display ran a close second to that of his superior, Goering; he was also his match in corpulence," wrote armaments minister Albert Speer after a visit to Sperrle in Paris.
The palace was a designated "strong point" for German forces defending the city in August 1944, but thanks to the decision of Commanding General Dietrich von Choltitz to surrender the city rather than fight, the palace was only minimally damaged.
From 29 July to 15 October 1946, the Luxembourg Palace was the site of the talks of Paris Peace Conference.

All I could see thru the view finder in the darker places was the green fuzzy light of the auto focus. I think that's what it was, Sometimes I'd almost see a green glow out of the corner of my eye. Musta had my finger on the release, yeah, that's what it was.

Mini Siam, The Royal Temple of the Emerald Buddha Exhibit, 387 Moo 6 Sukhumvit Rd., Pattaya City Naklua, Banglamung , Chonburi 20150.

The Wat Phra Kaew Pronunciation, English: Temple of the Emerald Buddha; full official name Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram, is regarded as the most sacred Buddhist temple ( Wat ) in Thailand. It is a potent religion - political symbol and the palladium of Thai society. It is located in the historical centre of Bangkok ( district Phra Nakhon ), within the precincts of the Grand Palace.
The main building is the central ubosoth, which houses the statue of Emerald Buddha. The legendary history of this Buddha image is traced to India, five centuries after the Lord Buddha attained Nirvana, till it was finally enshrined in Bangkok at the Wat Phra Kaew temple in 1782 during Rama I's reign ( 1782–1809 ). This marked the beginning and raise of the Chakri Dynasty of the present Kingdom of Thailand (the present head of the dynasty is King Rama IX. The Emerald Buddha, a dark green statue, is in a standing form, about 66 centimetres ( 26 in ) tall, carved from a single jade stone ( Emerald in Thai means deep green colour and not the specific stone ). It is carved in the meditating posture in the style of the Lanna school of the northern Thailand. Except for the Thai King, no other person is allowed to touch the statue. The King changes the cloak around the statue three times a year, corresponding to the summer, winter, and rainy seasons, an important ritual performed to usher good fortune to the country during each season.
While legend traces this statue to India, its rich historical records dates its finding in Cambodia in the 15th century, moved to Laos in the 16th century and then to Vientiane where it remained for 215 years, and finally to Thailand in the 18th century. Considering the long history and Nagasena's ( a Brahmin who became a Buddhist s age and lived about 150 BC ) prophecy that the Emerald Buddha would bring - prosperity and pre-eminence to each country in which it resides, the Emerald Buddha deified in the Wat Phra Kaew is deeply revered and venerated in Thailand as the protector of the country.
The Emerald Buddha statue originated in India as explained in the legend, but it is also linked to first vassal Kingdom of Cambodia. The image disappeared when Burmese raiders sacked Ayutthaya also spelt Ayudaya and the image was feared lost.
Continuing with the legend of the saint Nagasena of India, after remaining in Pataliputra ( present day
Patna ) for three hundred years, the Emerald Buddha image was taken to Sri Lanka to save it from a civil war. In 457, King Anuruth of Burma sent a mission to Ceylon with a request for Buddhist scriptures and the Emerald Buddha, in order to promote Buddhism in his country. These requests were granted, but the ship lost its way in a storm during the return voyage and landed in Cambodia. When the Thais captured Angkor Wat in 1432 ( following the ravage of the bubonic plague ), the Emerald Buddha was taken to Ayutthaya, Kamphaeng Phet, Laos and finally Chiang Rai, where the ruler of the city hid it. Cambodian historians recorded capture of the Buddha statue in their famous Preah Ko Preah Keo legend.
The Emerald Buddha reappeared in a chance discovery in Chaing Rai in 1434, after a lightning storm struck a temple. The Buddha statue fell down and was chipped. The storm had washed away some of its mud plaster covering (mud coat or stucco used to be laid to safeguard valuable Buddha images). The monks, after removing the plaster around the statue, discovered that the image was a perfectly made Buddha image from a solid piece of Jade, a precious stone. After that, the image moved around a few temples in Northern Thailand. It was then moved to Chiang Rai, then Chiang Mai, from where it was removed by prince Chao Chaiyasetthathirat to Luang Prabang, when his father died and he ascended the throne of both Lanna and Lan Xang, in 1551. The statue remained here for 12 years. Chaiyasetthathirat then shifted it to his new capital of Lan Xang in Vientiane in the 1560’s. He took the Emerald Buddha with him and thereafter the image remained in Vientiane for two hundred and fifteen years until 1778. In the early 18th century, the Kingdom of Lan Xang was divided into three different kingdoms; Vientiane, Luang Prabang, and Champassak..
King Taksin of Thonburi (Siam, now Thailand) was crowned king in 1768 ( he had defeated the Burmese ), reigned for 15 years, united the kingdom and expanded its territorial jurisdiction. Chao Phya Chakri
( Chakri is a title ) a renowned army general and associate of Taksin, in 1778, defeated the Vientiane and shifted the Emerald Buddha from Vientiane to Thonburi where it remained till Taksin's death. It was then deified in a shrine close to Wat Arun. Chroniclers mention that Taksin had become senile and consequently he was put to death by Chao Phra Chakri. Chao Phra Chakri then took over the reins of the Chakri Kingdom. He adopted the title Rama I and shifted his capital across the Menam Chao Phra river to its present location in Bangkok. The Emerald Buddha was

The Hotel California

The Hotel California

This Hotel on Geary Street in San Francisco reminded me of the famous songs of eagles . Apparently this is not the hotel this song was inspired by.

Here are the lyrics of my fav eagles #
The Hotel california
On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
’this could be heaven or this could be hell’
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say...

Welcome to the hotel california
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the hotel california
Any time of year, you can find it here

Her mind is tiffany-twisted, she got the mercedes bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

So I called up the captain,
’please bring me my wine’
He said, ’we haven’t had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine’
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say...

Welcome to the hotel california
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
They livin’ it up at the hotel california
What a nice surprise, bring your alibis

Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said ’we are all just prisoners here, of our own device’
And in the master’s chambers,
They gathered for the feast
The stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can’t kill the beast

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
’relax,’ said the night man,
We are programmed to receive.
You can checkout any time you like,
But you can never leave!

16 Things

16 Things

WARNING: There may be more information in the following little ditty about mrwaterslide than you are prepared to handle, and if you are at all afraid that that might be the case, don't read on.

1.) Not yet two-years-old, I put the Drano in the goldfish bowl.
2.) Out with the family for Sunday dinner at the Old Washington Inn (a little flea-bite town whose sole claim to fame was that Morgan's Raiders had come riding through), I locked the front door, a deed undiscovered for close to an hour. My mother says that my father had to give them a substantial sum of money to make-up for their loss of business.
3.) I had a rubber ball, or a series of rubber balls, that I bounced and caught, bounced and caught, bounced and caught, bounced and caught, bounced and caught, bounced and caught, indoors and out, against the house, against the wallpaper, against the brick wall in the garden, on and on, again and again, almost neverending. Once, when the ball rolled into the next room, my grandmother got it and put it in her apron. I knew that she had it. I asked her if she had it. She said she hadn't seen it. I was stymied. I couldn't call my grandmother a liar. I think I went for the rest of the day without my rubber ball.
4.) I first got to second base at the Boy Scout National Jamboree held at Valley Forge in Pennsylvania. Me and some other guy whose name might have been Ricky struck-up a conversation with these two girls who claimed to be Candy Stripers at a local King-of-Prussia hospital. Maybe they had their Candy Stripers uniforms on, which would give the story a little Japanese erotic kinky twist, except that I was not yet a dirty-old-man. We walked them all-the-way to the other side of the park, and bade them a prolonged groping goodbye. When we got back to our group, we had been found-out as curfew violators and were confined to our tents for the whole of the next day, until the next evening when they let us out to go hear LBJ, who flew in in a helicopter and vigorously defended his Viet Nam policy. While we were in the tent together, Ricky and I listened to that song about how "If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, you've got to marry an ugly wife," and Ricky pointed out the dirty lyrics.
5.) The day The White Album came out, we (the guys on my end of the hall in the dorm) got a bottle of Tanqueray and all got drunk. When the record got to that line in "Rocky Raccoon" about "stinking of gin," we all roared with laughter. Larry Goldblatt, who didn't drink and whose parents had a lot of money (most everyone there had parents who had more money than my parents had), came in with his $350 camera (when $350 was a lot of money---probably it was a Leica) and began taking pictures.
I remember looking up at him, helpless and well-neigh delirious, and thinking "Oh shit," or words to that effect. He took our photographs and made them in to postcards, and, when Christmas break came around, he sent one to each of us, at our home addresses. I went to the mailbox that day, and when I saw the card and that image of my drunken self, hair matted to my head, and realized what it was, I tore it into pieces and threw it in the trash, to my everlasting shame.
6.) I owned Bausch & Lomb @ $192 a share and rode it all the way down, like Slim Pickens in Dr. Strangelove, to something like $32 a share, where I sold it. I sold my Twenty-Century Fox stock just before Rupert Murdock made the tender offer and it skyrocketed. I bought defense industry put options when Reagan took office, thinking I would make some money, if nothing else, out of his presidency. The stock market tanked and soon my $8000 had vanished.
7.) Riding in the car on the way to the church for my grandmother's funeral, my grandfather (a Methodist preacher) told me that he had always hoped I would be the one to carry on his ministry.
8.) I am a member of The In-The-Middle-Of-The-Pedernales-River Club. I am a member of The On-A-Levee-By-The-Mississippi Club. I am a member of The On-Top-Of-A-Fire-Tower Club. I am not a member of The Mile-High Club.
9.) Once, sitting with my girlfriend on the roof of my house in Missouri with a beer and a cigarette, watching the sun go down (our almost nightly ritual) I looked up directly overhead and saw Jesus Christ, or at least that Christ imaged in the Shroud of Turin, but only from the waist up. It wasn't like kind-of like that Christ---it was the spitting image of that Shroud of Turin Christ, only it was a cloud, of course. "Look at that," I said to my girlfriend, and she looked up and said, "It's Jesus Christ."
10.) I have a $2400 burn on my legs. At work one night, in too much of a hurry, I opened a pressurized steam jacket too quickly to check on a pot roast that was boiling in a 600 pan. A Niagara Falls of boiling water came leaping out at me. The burn on my right leg is an almost perfectly formed rectangle, not really no

Cumberland Inn and Museum

The first time I visited this hidden gem of a museum it caught me totally by surprise. It's not the finest or largest museum of natural history you may ever see, but it is an unusually nice one to be in such a small town, and virtually unadvertised. The museum is housed in the large west wing of Cumberland Inn, and is operated by Cumberland College, a Baptist affiliated liberal arts school of about 1700 students.

There are two primary collections in the museum. You will see the Henkelmann Life Science Collection consisting of hundreds of specimens of animals ranging from the tiny Short-tail Shrew to the gigantic Polar Bear, procured by Henry and Mary Henkelmann on expeditions from Africa to the Arctic. The animals are displayed in surroundings created to match their habitats. Then there is the Dehoney collection, containing African animal trophies, artifacts and stories from tribes collected by Dr. Wayne Dehoney. The museum also houses the only Kentucky gallery of Ray Harm wildlife prints.

The Cumberland Inn also offers 50 guest rooms and suites and the Athenaeum Resaurant, the finest for many miles around.

A sign beside the entrance to the museum states that adult admission is $4.00. However, on the Saturday afternoon we stopped there most recently a young man waved us through without collecting the fee saying, "Just go on in." The entrance and exit of the museum are through a gift shop, operated by Cumberland College.
